Today is a very auspicious day in the Hindu Calender. This day is celeberated as Ratha Sapthami. Devotees offer special worship to Shree Mahaa Vishnu residing in the Sun. They offer special worship to Sun Deity.
It is a custom to draw the Sun, the Chariot, Lord Shree Mahaa Vishnu, seven horses on a clean plate using Kumkum water before beginning the worship ritual. I remember my beloved mother doing this. I also remember my beloved brother who used to bring Erukkam leaves for my bath on this day.
This festival symbolises thanks giving to Sun Deity who gives respected Solar Energy to all living things. Like all other deities, Sun carries out it's responsibilities under Lord Shree Mahaa Vishnu's Orders.
The seven horses in the chariot represent seven main colours in Sunlight.
It proves that our Scriptures mentioned that Sunlight consists of seven main colours, billions of years before Sir Isacc Newton's dicovery.
But unfortunately our School Science Textbooks never mention the above fact and thereby mislead our youngsters.
